Cascadia’s first rally of the 2011 camping season was an unqualified success. 22 rigs and 46 people gathered near Sequim on the Olympic Peninsula overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This is Washington’s so called “banana belt” so it didn’t rain the entire weekend. The sun struggled to break through the overcast. By Sunday morning, we got a magnificent view of the Olympic Mountains in their snow covered majesty. And, most of the snow birds aren’t even back yet.

The theme of the weekend was Italian. Event captains were Joann and Lee and Luigi and Sophia . With help from lots of other folks and the ovens in their rigs, they cooked us a lasagna dinner Saturday evening. Friday evening we all showed off our cooking or shopping skills for a potluck, following a meet and greet hour with an ice breaker based on Bingo. Actually, there wasn’t any ice to break as everyone was delighted to see each other after our four month hiatus. We also warmly welcomed a number of new comers and guests.

Besides eating, evenings were devoted to catching up with each other’s adventures and playing games in the Club House.

First thing Saturday morning, we gathered in the Club House for tea, coffee, muffins, and biscotti. A few minutes was devoted to report-backs from those who went to the RVW Convention in Mesa last October. The consensus was that the convention was lots of fun and Cascadia had a very good turnout for the event.

Then a number of folks went to Discovery Bay Resort for a tour of Washington’s women only RV Resort. Several sites are for sale so there was quite a bit of interest in the tour. Others visited the nearby casino, or the Audubon Visitor Center, or the Dungeness Spit, or other sights in Sequim. Some of us read or napped or walked our dogs or visited with each other, too.

Sunday morning, after more muffins and biscotti, there were five new rigs to christen before we began to hit the road until we meet again next month.

Rita Watkins - great and last update

Rita Watkins and Pat Parker made it back down to Quartzite, AZ in early March. Rita had been seriously ill and was hospitalized for weeks, first in Phoenix and then in BC. She is now back to her "old" self and traveling happily again in their Motorhome. Vicki and I are traveling with them as we head north for the summer at home. We will spend one last night on the road tomorrow in Washington and then part ways as they head up to their home in Richmond, BC. It was such a joy to have them return to their desert base and rejoin the group of RVing women waiting to greet them. Rita is a miracle in that she is feeling good and has no after effects of her illness. Vicki and I look forward to seeing our Cascadia friends at Ferndale and Mossyrock this season. We miss you and hope the winter has treated you all very well! Cathy Atkins

March 25-27 Event- Italian Weekend at Sequim

The Cascadia RVW March Event will kick off 2011 season in great style at Rainbow's End RV Park.. The theme will be an Italian Weekend. Friday night will be an Italian themed potluck. Saturday Night - Italian Bistro prepared by the club for members. Saturday activities include; tours to DBR, hike to the beach; art gallery in Sequim, Hurricane Ridge, Saturday morning-wrap up from the Convention, overview of 2011 events and more. Casino visits are possible during the weekend and a shuttle is being investigated.

Event captains will be Sequim locals-Joanne Garner and Lee Ann Brewer assisted by Lana Weed and Joan Tucker. Suzanne Larson and Sherri Buchan will help out as needed..

Rainbow’s End RV Park is a great jumping off place for sight seeing on the Olympic Peninsula. Strategically located just west of Sequim off of Highway 101, Rainbow’s End offers a serene and beautiful retreat after a busy day touring the local points of interest. I can only mention a few highlights.

Birding is big business on the Peninsula. The Dungeness River Audubon Center only about a mile from the RV Park at Railroad Bridge offers numerous educational programs and public events beneficial to all interested bird watchers. The Olympic Discovery Trail, a paved biking/hiking route, allows visitors a leisurely view of scenic vistas without worrying about traffic. The Discovery Trail is located within a mile of the RV Park. The Dungeness National Refuge (Spit) is the location of the oldest lighthouse north of the Columbia River. Access is by foot only and many species of birds can be observed. Day hikers can visit the lighthouse grounds and hike back in one day.
Olympic Park National Visitor Center provides information on hikes, naturalist programs and trail and weather conditions in the Park. The closest Visitor Center is in Port Angeles the town just west of Rainbow’s End RV Park. Stop by our office where we have the 2004 Olympic Park Institute Course Catalog.
Hurricane Ridge at 5200 ft. above sea level is one of Olympic National Park's most scenic areas offering a view of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the glacier-clad peaks of the Olympic Mountains. Deer are regularly seen along the Hurricane Ridge Road and mountain goats and marmots are spotted from nearby trails.
The Hoh Rain Forest is a temperate rain forest located southwest of Port Angeles. Average precipitation is 145 inches each year. Winter temperatures seldom drop below freezing and summertime highs rarely exceed 80°F. Giant, moss-draped Sitka spruce and western hemlock, some reaching 300 feet in height and 23 feet in circumference, are the dominant species. Various other tree and plant species fill up every bit of space.
Marymere Falls is a picturesque 90 foot waterfall located at the end of a three-quarter mile nature trail that begins at the Lake Crescent Visitor Center.
Drive along Lake Crescent, a deep freshwater lake that hugs the northern edge of the 101 Highway for some spectacular scenery. After hiking to Marymere Falls, stop for refreshments at Crescent Lodge, a gracious old wooden building with a large verandah for enjoying the view.
Just past Sol Duc Hot Springs featuring hot spring pools and a freshwater pool is a nature walk trail to Sol Duc Falls, possibly the most well known waterfall on the Peninsula. Travel along Highway 112 to reach Neah Bay, the most western point in the continental United States, and visit the Makah Indian Museum.
Sequim and its neighboring communities of Port Angeles and Port Townsend offer a full calendar of events besides superb restaurants, antique shops, and specialty stores. Check out the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Centers websites at www.peninsulaevents.com to get a complete listing of local festivals and events.
The Sequim-Dungeness Valley has year round golf available to the public at two golf courses, each with a driving range and pro shop. Charter boats with experienced captains are available at John Wayne Marina in Sequim and at Boat Haven in Port Angeles. Sightseeing charters are also available.
Royal Victorian Tours offers daylong trips to Victoria, BC at a great price that includes the ferry crossings, a historical city tour of Victoria and its outlying areas, entrance to Butchart Gardens, and free time to explore Victoria’s shops, eateries, and cultural attractions.

Hello all! Wow, what a couple of weeks we have had since Oct 17th! Our trip down to Arizona from Washington was absolutely wonderful. We caravan ed with a very dear friend of ours and together we have seen breath taking scenery along the way of our 1500 mile journey. So very diverse. From mountains and forests to scrub desert, to rocky mesas and open farm land with cattle grazing. We've seen herds of elk, antelope, deer, and much more. We drove to Portland , to Boise , Salt Lake City , and made special stops at Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks . We then went on to the Grand Canyon and then down to Mesa for our RVing Women's convention.
The convention is like an annual family reunion of RVing women from all over the US and Canada ! This year was the largest number in attendance... we had around 500 women and 300 rigs. We learned so much at the conference with all the classes and seminars on maintenance, safety, electrical systems, plumbing, troubleshooting, cleaning tips, fire safety, etc. It is an incredible week of "empowering powerful women" to do what we do so well.... take our RVs out and play without fear and ignorance in handling them and taking care of them on our own! Our minds are spinning with all we heard and hope to have assimilated into action! We played a lot there too with all our great friends, "old and new."
We are now settled into our next location in sunny Apache Junction, AZ at the Superstition Mountain Resort. Very very nice. May even be enticed to do this each year for several months.We are so thankful to our RVW friends, Sue Ellen and Norma who allowed us to rent their lot for the month of November, as they were unable to be down here yet
All is well, we are very happy and very busy. Going to be starting up with pickleball games, golf, Tai Chi, line dancing, swimming, playing poker and mexican train (dominoes), billiards, desert hiking, and who knows what all. Gee it's exhausting being retired! So many of our friends snowbird here in this place and so it's just one big party after another. The key for us will be to temper ourselves as we can't do it all, (but you know we'll try!) We feel very welcome and fit right in
We have family and friends down here in the Phoenix metro area that we will be connecting with over this month also. We are so looking forward to that.....

Tucson- preconvention gathering

On Monday Oct.25th,before the RVW convention begins, 40 Cascadians gathered for what we do best - visit and eat! Everyone has arrived safely - those who drove their RVs, those who flew down and those who are living in the area for the winter.

Since we weren't too quiet, lots of gals walked by wondering who was having all that fun. It was great to find everyone had arrived safely and all are ready to begin to enjoy the convention experience. Below are some pics of the gals last evening.

This is the second convention that Vicki and I have been able to attend since our retirement. There are 260 RVs here and about 480 women will be in attendance. This will be the largest convention that RVW has ever had. Hopefully, all of you will have an opportunity to attend a convention some day. I know from experience how hard it is to be working and unable to make the trek to convention.

I have already been attending Board meetings as an observer and have learned a great deal about the "inner" workings of the organization. I will officially be a Board member beginning in January and then the real work begins.

Hello all!

We are currently resting in a semi-vegetative state at Lincoln Rock State Park, just south of Lake Chelan and north of Wenatchee. We were shoooed out two days early from Lake Easton State Park, as they were completing the pad and kiosk for the host site as a memorial tribute to a long time previous host. Soooo we took the opportunity to hide out and rest up before heading to our next destination. To be honest, we realize we are exhausted from the constant physical work and being always available to so many people day and night. We love this work, and it is tiring at times. This is a good two day respite for us.

Tomorrow morning we pack up again and head to Lake Wenatchee State Park. We heard from the Rangers there that the park had been closed and all the reservations canceled due to trees falling and at risk to fall due to the nasty little beatle larva that is preying on our forests. The Rangers have kept us informed and have dropped many trees this past week that are extremely hazardous and will re-open the North Shore first loop only for camping. We will be needed as hosts for that as well as helping with the tree dropping, chainsawing limbs, chipping and clearing process that will need to happen in the 1st and 2nd loops as well as the South Park area. Lots of physical work to do and they have a limited staff to work with so volunteers like us are very much in need. We were a part of this on a small scale in May before we opened the park. The winds this summer revealed the drastic danger situation among the trees. We have been assured that we will be in our regular location and a safe one, in that they have cleared trees as needed in our area to make room for us to be there.

There will be another host scheduled to work with us and also oversee the day use swim beach area primarily.

September will be a physical one but we feel good being able to give back to the park and help the staff. State funds for our parks is a limited commodity and that's where we come in. Happy to PAY IT FORWARD!!!

Cascadia Survivor - Westport

A fun and exciting adventure awaited Cascadians as we gathered in Westport for a Survivor weekend. Members were divided into three well balanced teams for the competition to Outwit, Outplay and Outlast. Competition began Friday evening and continued Saturday afternoon. We played under sunny skies and a grand time was had by all.

Each team selected three members to be blindfolded to seek the puzzle pieces and others put the puzzle pieces together after they were retrieved. One caller for each team directed the search.

The next event found sling shots lobbing balloons through the air into large tubs. Most balloons in won the event. Ready, Aim, Fire!

Water had to be carried in coconut shell halves and raced to fill buckets. First team to get the ping pong ball out of the wastebasket without touching it won. Watch out for traffic!Almost there. One more trip, splash and it was out!

The final competition was indoors and was a playing card toss competition. Most cards in the basket won. Cards were flying everywhere.

Everyone had their chance to be a heroine.And the winning team was...........the Green team.

And the Ultimate Survivor based on team play, spirit, leadership and competitive play was............................. Lynda shown here with her trophy.

The first ever Survivor weekend was a huge hit. Everyone hopes we get to return to the island some day for another chance to Outwit, Outplay and Outlast.

RVW Board Candidate announcement

I wish to announce to all my Cascadia friends that I have decided to run for the RVW Board of Directors. I made the announcement at the Lake Sawyer event and wanted to tell you all here too!

This is something I have thought about for a long time. I decided the time is right with now being retired and spending so much time in the RV traveling. Election information will be in the Sept./Oct. RVW magazine with voting ending at the end of October.

I would love the opportunity and honor of representing you all on the RVW Board.

Hi all, I have been in training to take over web site duties from Lady Di but woe is me, I have had a rough time with my computer, the two software systems- Dreamweaver and CUTE FTP and have
decided to step out of the learning curve. Di is great teacher and very patient so I know someone with a little more Dreamweaver expertise would do fine.

So I am begging you, please step forward if you want to become the next Cascadia web master. Di will help you transition and all will be well. Having comfort with file hierarchies and some experience with Dreamwever would help. The site is already designed you only have to update it.

I will continue to maintain our Blog and Facebook presences for Cascadia and maybe take on some other tasks as we go along.

Hello all,

We have been up in Birch Bay Resort (located just south of Blaine on the coast south of the Canadian Border) since April 12th and it has been a great place for birding, walking the beach, watching folks clamming on the beach. We enjoyed the Brandt Goose migration festival up here and have been frequented by Bald Eagles in the area. So spectacular. We also had a great time connecting with some dear friends of ours in Bellingham (the Lindas) and eating, playing games and lots of laughter and hugs.

Prior to coming here, we were in Eastern WA and had the spectacular opportunity to see fields and fields of Sandhill Cranes on their migration enroute to Alaska from South America.

I know it all sounds kind of campy, but it brings us great joy and we get our walking in, fresh air, lots of sunshine and just good earthy beauty.

We are leaving here tomorrow morning for Randle (located on Hwy 12 just south of Mt. Rainier). We will be with our RVW (RVing Women) group this coming weekend and then next week start making our way toward Wenatchee via White Pass and Yakima. We will be on site and ready to go May 1st for our first Camp Ground hosting job at Lake Wenatchee and looking forward to it! COME SEE US!

We are learning how to make 31 feet a home for all of us (2 adults, 1 dog, 1 cat, 2 birds). Tight quarters but will be better when the weather gets warmer and dryer. We are still trying to find out how to "do" what we love to do personally like hobbies and yet in a small space that doesn't store much. We haven't been bored yet and in fact, our days fly by and we have no idea where the time goes! As most retired people say, "I have no idea how I ever had time to work! I'm so busy being retired!"

We miss our kids as always and call and bug them often. E-mail works great too. They are trying to get us to launch further into the 21st century and start "texting" and "facebooking". We thought we launched when we got WI FI wireless, cell phones and netflix! Geez, it never ends.

We think of all so often....

Well Cascadia, getting that rig ready, washing her down; stocking up, airing her out??? Time to get all charged up for Spring camping. Very exciting year planned out for the club; lots of fun sites and great adventures.

Another wet and wild day at Coast; checked out RV camping in Elma and Ocean City at K/M Resorts.

Not tooo crowded lol!!! Great head and sinus clearing. We are becoming tough titas with this RV action. Heating, wiping, desogging, more fun than any dry lander could imagine.

Bought a 10 ft camper in October of 2008, joined RVWomen and and the Cascadia Chpter and never made a single weekend. Parents, parents, parents....Maybe 2010 Pinky and I will get to a chapter event.

We have installed a small boat heater in the RV; it keeps the area from freezing; helps keep moisture out and makes it easier to jump in and drive off in a less than freezing vehicle. We also have "moisture seeking granules" containers for moisture reduction. If it is predicted to go way cold in the 30's and below we will winterize. It has been so much fun to play with our rig.. again thanks, Patty and Jill.

Crockpot Chicken

4 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 large roasting chicken
1 cup onion, chopped

In a small bowl, combine the spices.
Remove any giblets from chicken and clean chicken.
Rub spice mixture onto the chicken.
When ready to cook, put chopped onion in bottom of crock pot. You can also add carrots and celery.
Add chicken. No liquid is needed, the chicken will make it's own juices.
Cook on low 4-8 hours. Check for doneness with thermometer or check on juices near leg area.
Serve with rice or potatoes. A soup can be made in crock pot with chicken carcass and left over juices and vegetables.

For those of you new to the blogging world, I am creating some simple steps to get you to participate.

Go to blog: http://www.cascadiarvw.blogspot.com
Go to the Post ( a post is message on the main part of page)
At the end of the Post is the word comments
click comments and it will take you to box where you can write your comment
and when you are done sign in as requested.
There are some jumbled letters.. This keeps spammers out.
Signing in to make a Google Acct. is one more step and then you will always be able to leave comments on blogs.
After you have done these steps, I get an email and I publish your comments
Your comments will show up on the blog under comments.
This all gets easy and natural after you get active in blogging world.
